If you are wondering what a "backbeat" is, it is simply refering to the snare drum on the 2 count and the 4 count (the back end of the groove). The differing kick patterns (referring to the bass drum) develops independence in your bass drum foot, and will open you up to new groove ideas that you can take to different songs.
