Rhythmic Transitions One thing that drummers (and any musician) needs to be able to do well is anticipate and precisely execute differences in rhythmic note values.  More specifically, drummers need to be able to transition between a quarter note pulse, eighth note pulse, sixteenth note pulse, triplets, etc.  The following videos are a good step in training your ability to jump between some different rhythmic note values. This page shows up at different stages of the BecomeADrummer.com's free lessons, so check which ones I reccomend doing at each stage: Rhythm/Hand Training - #3:   Work on all quarter notes videos.  You would also be able to do 8th notes to 16th notes!  Quarter Notes To Eighth Notes Quarter Notes To Sixteenth Notes Quarter Notes To Eighth Note Triplets Quarter Notes To Sixteenth Note Triplets Eighth Notes To 16th Notes Eighth Notes To 8th Note Triplets Eighth Notes To 16th Note Triplets Eighth Note Triplets to 16th Notes ...

MORE FREE DRUM LESSONS HERE Lesson 4:  Triplet Based Grooves This lesson switches the feel of the grooves to triplet 8th notes with a snare back beat on beats 2 and 4.  The first two videos are two examples from the lesson with music play alongs, followed by the playlist of ALL the grooves on their own. (Hit the hamburger icon to see any of those examples).  There are also song clips that use the triplet feel grooves you can try to play along to.  Keep in mind it is a clip within the song, so when it starts, try to come in after you hear 4 beats!  Be sure to hit the hamburger icon in order to choose other examples from the lesson! MORE FREE DRUM LESSONS HERE Become A Drummer - Level 1 - Lesson 3 Here, we focus on 8th note grooves with a backbeat and vary the kick patterns.  If you are wondering what a "backbeat" is, it is simply refering to the snare drum on the 2 count and the 4 count (the back end of the groove).   The differing kick patterns (referring to the bass drum) develops independence in your bass drum foot, and will open you up to new groove ideas that you can take to different songs.  The first 3 videos below are examples 1, 3, 5 from  Become A Drummer Level 1.   The videos include animated notation, a demonstration, and a chance to play along to some music at different tempos.  The 4th video is actually a playlist of ALL the example from Lesson 3.  At the very bottom, I have include a few clips of songs that use these kind of drum patterns.     Example 1 Example 3 Example 5 To view the whole playlist of exercises in Lesson 3, click the hamburger icon s...

MORE FREE DRUM LESSONS HERE Lesson 1: Building Core Grooves In this lesson, you will develop 4 core grooves that act as a foundation for different genres of music.  They set the stage for you to be grooving with different  feels .  At these beginning stages, you need to develop some hand to foot coordination, so the first exercises do just that!  The early examples each with help you build the coordination needed and by the last examples, you will be grooving!  The first example is very simple...  BUT, the tricky part about it is keeping every note evenly spaced.   You are going to be playing quarter notes  with 4 counts that repeat on the high hat.  Keep it going throughout the whole video, because a playalong song joins you halfway through!  Core Groove 1: Step 1
